Description
The medical coding program is geared towards students who already have a background in the medical field, either from current or previous employment or training from another allied health disciplines. These students are often seeking a new set of skills for a career change. The medical coding program is designed to education students with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for a career as a medical coder. Students will be exposed to a variety of issues relating to the healthcare field as well as common medical terminology which will relate to their future careers in medical coding.
Medical coders review medical documents in order to assign standardized medical codes. These codes are essential in determining accurate billing, referral, insurance, and pharmacy records. According to the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), medical codes translate physician notes, radiology and laboratory records, and other medical documentation into standardized codes that tell payers the following:
- Patient’s diagnosis
- Medical necessity for treatments, services, or supplies the patient received.
- Treatments, services, and supplies provided to the patient.
- Any unusual circumstances or medical condition that affected those treatments and services.
Upon completion of the Medical Coding Certificate of Proficiency, students will be prepared to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification which is a requirement for future employment in the medical coding field.
