Description
The Patient Care Technician program is a combination of both the Nursing Assistant program and the Phlebotomy program. Patient Care Technicians, or PCTs, work under the supervision of nurses, advanced practice personnel, and physicians to provide direct patient care of basic needs and draw labs. Patient Care Technicians are employed in hospitals, long term care facilities, medical offices, and other healthcare related areas.
- Nursing Assistant Program
The four-to-eight-week Nursing Assistant certificate program, approved by the Department of
Human Services, Office of Long-Term Care, Post Office Box 8059, Little Rock, AR 72203, (501) 682-6177, combines classroom instruction with clinical experience. Successful completion of the program will prepare the student for the state certification exam required for Nursing Assistant certification. Students can apply for employment in a hospital, nursing home, home health setting and other medical facilities. It is recommended that students interested in the program attend a scheduled orientation. An entrance exam will be given on the day of orientation and used for selection if class size requires.
Program enrollment requirements include BRTC enrollment and placement examination completion. Students are required to purchase liability insurance upon admission into the program. This is available through a group policy. This $5.00 fee will be attached to your tuition each semester. Upon completion of this program each student will be required to take the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI). Nursing Assisting Exam as a 3rd Party Assessment for this program. Once accepted into the program, students must:
• Pass a drug screen to be eligible to continue the program
• Show proof of a negative TB skin test, IGRA, or Chest X Ray
• Show proof of an up-to-date Tetanus vaccine
• Pass a Criminal Background Check to attend clinical
All tuition and fees will be the responsibility of the students in the event that the organizational
sponsorship does not fulfill the tuition obligation.
- Phlebotomy Program
The 12 or 17 credit-hour program prepares individuals, under supervision of physicians and other healthcare professionals, to draw blood samples from patients using a variety of invasive procedures. Instruction includes basic vascular anatomy and physiology, blood physiology, skin and venipuncture techniques, specimen collection and handling, safety and sanitation procedures, and applicable standards and regulations.
Upon completion of this program each student will be required to take the National Health career Association's (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam as a Third-Party Assessment for this program.
BRTC's Nursing and Allied Health programs contract with healthcare facilities in order for students to meet their clinical course outcomes. These facilities may have additional mandatory requirements that students and faculty must comply with in order to attend clinical within their facility. If for any reason, those requirements are not met by a student and the facilities prohibit attendance, a student may not be able to complete the program requirements, resulting in the inability to successfully complete the program.
